Publishing SIG Technical/Scientific Editor

Responsibilities

The editor will refine technical manuscripts written for external and internal publications by editing text for grammar, punctuation, organization, and scientific content. The editor will coordinate production of internal publications, including: setting schedule and deadlines with authors; selecting the most time- and cost-effective means of production; proofreading edited manuscripts; coordinating cover design with graphic designer; and tracking job through printing, proof-checking, and delivery. The editor will consult with faculty on scientific writing and maintain records of manuscripts and publications. Publications may be produced electronically and/or in printed form. Materials must be easily read and understood by targeted audiences, professional in appearance, and supporting university, college, and research and Extension missions.

Qualifications

Required:

• Bachelor’s degree in science or communications field.
• Four years’ experience as a scientific editor, writer, or communicator.
• Practical experience with desktop publishing hardware and software.
• Experience in prioritizing and handling multiple projects.
• Strong communications skills to effectively understand and communicate scientific information to scientists and non-scientists alike.

• Master’s degree in science or communications field.
• Ability to edit quickly and accurately.
• Willingness to share skills and experience.
• Openness to new publication design concepts.
