Job Title: Publishing Coordinator
Purpose of Job
The person in this position formats and prepares publications for print and
electronic media and manages a web site.
Job Duties
- Format and prepare color and black and white publications for
laser, Docutech, and imagesetter output; and train staff to accomplish
these tasks.
Skills Required: Desktop publishing skills and expertise, ability
to recognize the best technology for the task, mastery of publication
production software, using scanning software to create good graphics, using
software to create publication-quality mathematical equations.
- Manage department web site, serve as consultant for web methods and
structure for several administrative units, coordinate web site creation
for related administrative units, and train staff to create and maintain
web sites.
Skills Required: WWW knowledge; use of Hyper Text Markup Language
(HTML) coding; use of Internet publishing software; use of computer file
transfer protocols; use of Eudora and Pine.
- Use optimum technology to transform desktop publishing, word
processing, spreadsheets, and databases into web pages.
Skills Required: Use of Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML) coding,
use of web publishing software, use of computer file transfer protocols.
- Copy-edit and proof publications and web pages.
Skills Required: Editorial skills.
- Update software, make purchases, and update knowledge of desktop
publishing and web site techniques, stay apprised of technology changes in
publishing industry.
Skills Required: Knowledge of computer use in businesses and
universities, awareness of changes coming in DTP and web software industry,
ability to recognize the best technology available for tasks.
- Develop archiving procedures for publications; oversee archive
maintenance and update.
Skills Required: Knowledge of spreadsheets and database software.
- Provide leadership in department for troubleshooting software and
hardware problems on Macintosh computer.
Skills Required: Knowledge of Macintosh computer operation,
hardware/software interface.
Skill and Knowledge Requirements
Knowledge of how to operate software for page layout and print production;
prepress desktop publishing techniques; print process, typesetting and
layout principles; publication design; how to experiment with software and
hardware to attain best quality of output; knowledge of web site design and
maintenance; coding of documents for web publication; web publishing
principles; Internet software; working knowledge of Unix operating system,
file security, file transfer protocols, and telnet (e.g., level of
knowledge gained in college-level introductory computer science courses);
good writing principles and what makes a high-quality publication; editing
and proof-reading, including effective use of editing reference books;
editorial procedures; how to teach and train people; how to find best
technology for paper and web publishing.
