PUBLICATION PRODUCTION MANAGER

Job Title: Publication Production Manager

Job Duties

  1. Manage production of publications for research, education, and outreach, from written manuscript to final printed publication. Includes brochures, information sheets, posters, booklets, annual reports, catalogs, how-to-manuals, curriculum guides, color fish identification guides, hard-bound meeting proceedings, etc.
    Skills Required: Work as team member, problem solving, attention to detail, setting priorities, keeping records, knowledge of academic peer review system, bringing projects to completion, handling a demanding schedule with many deadlines, putting together a book for manufacture.

  2. Edit manuscripts (includes rewriting, copy-editing, proofreading).
    Skills Required: Science editing, using English grammar, language.

  3. Hire and supervise staff.
    Skills Required: Communication, interviewing and hiring, setting work standards, quality control, keeping records, setting priorities, delegating, managing people, negotiation, team building.

  4. Write newsletter and abstracts.
    Skills Required: Writing, interviewing, using English grammar, language.

  5. Oversee distribution of publications to reach best audiences and to fulfill state and federal regulations.
    Skills Required: Publications marketing, use of database.

Job Requirements:

Bachelor's degree with coursework in science and English or journalism. Knowledge and training in biological sciences, including zoology, ecology, and mathematics; use of science and mathematical symbols; knowledge of graphs, tables, and other presentation of scientific research; use of scientific journals; knowledge of reference books for science and editing; knowledge of publications production process including working with authors and academic peer reviewers, researching editorial details, writing, rewriting, checking spelling and grammar, editing bibliographies, designing technical publications including tables, proofreading, marking manuscripts for typesetter, writing print specifications for print shops, quality control on print job; knowledge of quality book publishing; training in supervising, including interviewing and hiring, and delegating tasks; knowledge of scientific writing for the lay person; knowledge of process used to do desktop page layout including graphics; knowledge of mailing list database; knowledge of marketing and distributing publications; knowledge of natural resources; and use of personal computers and word processing software.
