Highlights of the Year

Significant accomplishments this year reflect the progress that can be made and the excitement that can be generated when members participate fully in SIG activities.

  1. Our call for ideas for the special Publications SIG session at Asilomar had a great response. There was a flurry of e-mail as individuals weighed in with thoughts about topics that would benefit the group. As the officers began to put the session together, we saw that there were too many ideas to incorporate into one session. Consequently, we narrowed our scope to a "doable" session and, with the help of Ivar Nelson, lined up an appropriate guest speaker.

  2.

  3. The discussion about the C&A program which began during the business meeting in Cleveland carried over into an e-mail discussion which lasted several weeks. Quite a few members participated. From that, we seemed to reach a consensus about new directions we would like to see for C&A. These are contained in the Fall '97 report.

  4.

  5. Two very deserving members were nominated for the Award of Excellence. The award this year will go to Edna M. Smith of Texas.
Issues and Concerns

During the 1997 business meeting we outlined the content we would like to have a on a Publications SIG Web page. Following the meeting, I found a member who was willing to gather the information and be the point of contact with our helper from the IT SIG in developing the page. Unfortunately, that person asked to be excused from the responsibility before anything could be accomplished. Efforts to find a replacement were unsuccessful. It seems that no one has the time, in addition to regular job activities, to take on this responsibility.

Communications with Members

Communication with members has been entirely by e-mail, except of the annual business meeting. On the whole, this has worked quite well.

In addition to the e-mail interactions mentioned above, other communications had to do with suggesting judges for the C&A program and nominating candidates for Vice Chair-elect.

In finding C&A judges, the most help came from ACE members in Iowa who provided a list of three or four qualified people.
