Third largest SIG (191 members)
Second half of meeting to focus on: digital imagery, royalties, e-commerce,
print-on-demand
Announcements:
They have one-and-a-half day annual meeting, very informal,
and Pub SIG members are welcome to attend. At next meeting could invite
an expert, help select topics for discussion (bar-coding suggested).
Only one problem this year, with Category 23: Special Reports. Many
rated lower than usual, winners elsewhere, will likely get a new judge
next year. We need comments on bad experiences with judges, if they need
to be replaced, carried over otherwise. Also need nominations for new judges,
$10 per entry.
There are few photography specialists anymore.
Frankie distributed a handout by John Wozniak at LSU which contains valuable information.
Resolution selection should be based on intended use.
See "Rule of 2" for useful rule of thumb.
A new Fuji $2500 camera is available that uses old Nikon lenses.
LSU beginning to copyright for first time to protect content, also
looking into trademark, copyrighting name separate from book, product
Three types: state, national, universal/global; each with separate form, fee.
Frankie has list of web sites for forms
Trademark is another process
Web sites:
www.uspto.gov
www.uspto.gov/web/forms/index.html
www.uspto.gov/web/menu/tm.html
www.loc.gov/copyright
www.loc.gov/copyright/forms/
also Secretary of State office web site
Royalties:
New Colorado policy in process, authors asking for incentive - adding 7.5%, to dept. after costs of printing and marketing
CSU: cost to print plus 100% plus 20% (marketing) plus 11% (for overhead on revolving fund) plus author overhead
Dept publishing enterprises - asking them to take advantage of retail outlet, if willing to work with pricing formula
peer review: needed for pub number, also need to be within university
mission; also trying to include products done through outside publishers by faculty - formula may not be enforced - so we don't have to redirect customers
Hawaii doesn't allow sending out material w/indicia unless reviewed
Different review processes at other states
Perhaps time to review process at different states by sharing processes
P&T process adds weight to this process for faculty
Goal: collect review policies and forms for web site sharing
Print out form or online processing?
What are people doing? How are foreign orders handled? (domestic and foreign postage rates)
? problem with offering for-sale pubs online for free?
Reaching audiences not otherwise seen, esp. international
Florida big on it - also splits free from for sale
EDIS: all documents are headed for that database
Author can input document directly, goes to review site, editor notified, author contacts reviewers, sends form and hard copy for approval - uses front end proprietary software for conversion, based on an outline format
Counties can order printing on demand through EDIS system, 2-3 days response time (2 Docutechs, 1 Docucolor)
Texas: electronic only pubs - offering print on demand for those titles to counties
Viatech (Ohio) is an outside p.o.d. company good for large binder products, tabs, cd and holder (100 per run) at less than $40 per unit, shrink-wrapped - less warehousing necessary
Master Gardener: 425 per year in Idaho, as another example - charge $50, $32 to counties, actual cost $18
Discount for bulk orders is prevalent
