Glenda Freeman is an editor in the publishing unit of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System at Auburn University. She is responsible for editing and managing numerous technical and nontechnical manuscripts, public relations materials and the system director's official newsletter. Publications she has edited have won awards from the American Society for Horticultural Science, Southern Region, the National Association of Family and Consumer Sciences/Alabama Affiliate, and Communications Concepts. She has developed a publications evaluation process, worked on the popular "Baby's First Year Calendar," edited a major revision of the book "Backyard Beekeeping" and participated in extension's Web Crisis Committee. She has a particular interest in helping authors develop materials for low reading level audiences.
In 2002 Glenda helped conduct "Navigating the Publishing Process," a workshop at the Alabama extension state conference. In 2003 she developed and helped present "Need a Tune-Up? Writing Right," an in-service writing and grammar training for extension personnel. She judges entries for the National Association of County Agricultural Agents and created a critique and evaluation process for a 4-H creative writing competition.
Glenda earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from Northeastern State University. She worked as a reporter and feature writer for the Muskogee Daily Phoenix before becoming director of publications at NSU. There she edited, wrote and designed numerous university publications, wrote news releases, supervised student newspaper and yearbook staffs and served as assistant to the director of public relations. In 1978 she and her family moved to the Golden Isles of Georgia, where she spent eight years writing freelance feature and news stories about the Brunswick/St. Simon's Island/Jekyll Island area.
An ACE member since 1999, Glenda, as part of various teams, has won a 2004 ACE gold award in publishing, a 2000 ACE gold award in editing and a 2000 ACE silver award in publishing. As part of the ACE Membership Committee, she developed a new member survey and was instrumental in developing the new mentorship program. In April 2004 she was chosen vice chair-elect of the publishing special interest group. She has attended ACE meetings and is one of the breakout session presenters this year.
