AWARD OF EXCELLENCE

2002: Meg Ashman

Extension Professor Meg Ashman received her master's degree in communication theory and research from the School of Journalism at the University of Oregon. As extension publications editor at the University of Vermont since 1974, Ashman edits and produces technical bulletins, popular leaflets, newsletters, brochures, administrative documents, and curricula for print and electronic publishing. She also conducts group training for--and individual consultation with--state and regional faculty on writing, editing, design, and production of publications and exhibits.

Ashman has been a frequent presenter at ACE/NETC and other professional conferences on topics including technical writing style, communicating about research to the public, grammar training, readership surveys and intellectual property.

Ashman's recent publications include Training the Grammar Trainer, a 120-page manual plus companion CD developed with ACE colleagues LaRae Donnellan and Florita Montgomery, for which they received a gold award for noncredit educational project in the ACE Critique & Awards program. She just completed a six-month sabbatical leave during which--among other activities--she adapted much of the material in that manual and developed a WebCT course on grammar, punctuation and word usage.

Ashman's service to ACE has included serving as a reviewer for the Journal of Applied Communications, chair of the Strategic Planning Committee, regional representative to the Publications Special Interest Group, program co-chair of the 1995 international conference, chair of the International Special Interest Group, state representative and chair of the Marketing Task Force. She received the ACE Service Award in 1996.
