Prior to her career with Extension, Carol Whatley held several positions, including teaching English at Auburn University. For 3 years, she was associate director of the Sun Belt Writing Project, a graduate-credit summer workshop for teachers. She received her doctorate in English Education from Auburn University in 1983.
For the next 7 years, she owned and operated a writing, editing and consulting business, The Write Place. In 1990, she joined the Alabama Cooperative Extension System as a communications specialist and coordinator of the publications unit. In 1999, she was named co-leader of Extension Communications with staff at both Alabama A&M and Auburn Universities, while retaining the role of publishing unit coordinator. Highlights of Whatley’s publishing work include marketing selected publications to other states, developing promotional publications, leading the publishing unit from a print-only to a print-and-electronic operation and collaborating on awarding-winning publications. In addition to communications-related work, Whatley has served on numerous Extension and Auburn University boards and committees. In 1997-98, she was president of the Alabama Extension Specialists Association, organizing and chairing the first Alabama Extension Associations Council with membership, including the leaders of all the professional organizations in Alabama Extension.
Her ACE involvement has included presenting sessions at annual conferences, winning awards as part of a publishing team, and serving as chair of the Publishing Special Interest Group.
