5. -30- : SRRT in QCQC
Do you like politics as much I as do? Do you race for the remote control to be sure the television is set for "Hardball with Chris Matthews"? Or are you among those who shudder at the very mention of anything political? Whichever camp you are in, I assure you that election time in the ACE Publishing SIG is a congenial and harmonious event.
This year we have three well-qualified and exceptional candidates for the office of vice chair-elect. Please take a moment to read the biographical sketch of each candidate then mark your ballot, cut and paste it into an e-mail to me at freemgr@auburn.edu. Only current members of the ACE Publishing SIG are eligible to vote.
All ballots must reach me by NOON Wednesday, MARCH 15 so we can count the votes and send the name of the new vice chair-elect to ACE Vice President Kris Boone and ACE headquarters.
Select one candidate for the office of Publishing SIG Vice Chair-Elect:

Since 2001, I have served as managing editor of California Agriculture
magazine (http://CaliforniaAgriculture.ucop.edu/),
the peer-reviewed research journal published by the University of
California's Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources. In 1999, I was
hired to edit a special four-part series of California Agriculture magazines
for the year 2000. I earned a master's degree in journalism from the
University of California at Berkeley in 1991. As a freelance writer and
editor, I worked for numerous clients, including CRC Press's Food Chemical
News and Pesticide and Toxic Chemical News; Endangered Species and Wetlands
Report, an independent newsletter; and nonprofit organizations such as the
Natural Resources Defense Council, World Wildlife Fund and the American
Diabetes Association. I think that the ACE PubSIG has established a lucid
and sensible set of goals, and I would like to help the committee reach
them. I am a new ACE member, but I look forward to getting to know you and
learning from my colleagues from around the country.

relatively newcomer to ACE, she assisted with the ACE Writing Workshop held
in Oxford, Mississippi last October.
As part of the Mississippi State University Office of Agricultural
Communications team, most recently Montgomery handles marketing for
Mississippi State University's Division of Agriculture, Forestry and
Veterinary Medicine, which includes Extension Services, Mississippi
Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station and the College of Veterinary
Medicine. Other responsibilities including editing Extension publications
and curriculums.
During her career at MSU, Montgomery has been awarded honors by the Southern
Public Relations Federation and the College Public Relations Association of
Mississippi. Before coming to MSU, she was assistant professor of journalism
at William Carey College in Hattiesburg. She also has taught at Mississippi
University for Women.

KEVIN LEIGH SMITH
Communication Consultant/Editor/Witer
Purdue University Department of Agricultural Communication
(765) 494-9558
kevlsmith@purdue.edu
Kevin Leigh Smith is an editor in the Purdue University Department of
Agricultural Communication Publication Unit. He edits and manages Extension
and educational materials projects for the three Purdue Agriculture
departments, and is the Events editor, which involves work on museum-quality
exhibits, programs, and promotional materials. In addition to his editorial
duties, Smith teaches YDAE 460 (Agricultural Publishing), a course that
produces Destination Purdue, a magazine that promotes Purdue Agriculture to
high school students throughout Indiana. An ACE member since 2004, Smith
received two Gold Awards in 2005 for technical publications and technology
education.
If chosen vice chair-elect, Smith would like to create opportunities for ACE
PubSIG members to share ideas and analyses of their work. For example, once
a month (or so) a SIG member would be invited to share his or her
experiences by posting a one-page "case study" of a project on the SIG Web
site. These case studies ought to follow a fairly consistent format that
outlines such things as the project's need, challenges, impact, and so on.
An archive of such case studies could serve as a reservoir of ideas and
experiences for all SIG members.
3. The ABCs of Hyphenated Last Names
Tom Merrill, LSU AgCenter Communications, generated an interesting discussion
when he asked about guidelines for alphabetizing hyphenated last names. His
original question and the responses are available at
http://www.aceweb.org/sigs/publishing/survey12.htm.
Thanks, Tom, for sharing the results of your survey.

All those going to the ACE annual conference in Quebec City June 2-6 will
want to reserve the Saturday evening dinner-on-your-own time slot for the SRRT
in QCQC. OK, that's the Social Responsibility Round Table in Quebec City,
Quebec, Canada. The Publishing and Writing SIGs are cosponsors of the event.
Many thanks to Jim Coats, who has worked tirelessly to develop this concept for
ACE and who has arranged a speaker to help lead the discussion. Plans are to
make this a lively and fun evening -- perhaps in the style of The Inklings (if
that's not too pretentious). Watch for more information soon. In the meantime,
check out the conference Web site at
http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/ace2006/. Preregistration starts very soon!
"Au revoir, ya'll" -- that's goodbye with my Oklahoma/Alabama accent!
