7. -30- : Grammar Hint
Amid the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, I'm reminded of how blessed I feel to be part of an organization of communication specialists who often find themselves in a position to reach out to others. In a routine year, I find satisfaction in the work we do; in a year with extraordinary challenges, I find pride in how our colleagues have stepped up to the plate. I am, of course, speaking of the response to the devastating hurricanes that hit the Gulf Coast in 2005.
Personally and professionally, I have been amazed at the stories of men and women meeting the challenge to help their fellow man. As one of my colleagues observed, "We have seen so many examples of individuals bringing solutions to life's problems to the people who need them most." What a wonderful thought for this time of year!
2. Editing Category Judge to Address Conversation Call
Have you ever wondered exactly what a judge is looking for as he or she evaluates your entries in the ACE Critique and Awards program? Your PubSIG is trying to help answer that question. Again this year, we have invited one of the judges to be a guest for a SIG-wide conversation call to discuss the judging process. This year Bob Griffin, judge for Class 25, Editing, will join us Monday, Dec. 19 from 11:00 to 12:00 p.m. Central time. Bob will offer insight into how he looks at entries and what we can do in preparing entries to show our work at its best. You'll have a chance to ask questions and give him feedback about his role in critiquing the entries.
To dial in, call (979) 847-9187. If you are calling from the Texas A&M campus, dial 182, listen for the call tone, dial 99995, listen for the call tone, and dial 187. For other time zones, the 11:00 Central start time would be 12:00 for Eastern time, 10:00 for Mountain time, and 9:00 for Pacific time.
Here's a little background on Bob Griffin: He has worked as a freelance editor and writer for more than fifteen years. He has edited more than three hundred books and journals covering such diverse subjects as business, history, civics and social studies, folklore, nursing and health care, special education, psychology and petroleum engineering. Before becoming a full-time freelancer, Griffin worked for several publishing houses, including the University of South Carolina Press, Memphis State University Press, Bruccoli Clark Publishers, the Society of Petroleum Engineers, and Southern Methodist University Press. He also worked as an editor and technical writer for the Texas House of Representatives and is co-author of a four-volume reference set about world holidays, published in 2000.
Thanks to Helen White, PubSIG vice chair, for making arrangements for the call and for all her work in preparing for the 2006 C&A for the PubSIG.
ACE and the Publishing SIG are pleased to welcome a new member, Amy Rhodes. Amy works in Washington, D.C., and is a member of the electronic media, graphic design, publishing, marketing, and photography SIGs. Her e-mail address is arhodes@csrees.usda.gov.
Welcome, Amy!
4. Award of Excellence Nominations Due Soon
Shortly after the beginning of the new year, you will receive the formal call
for nominations for the 2006 Publishing SIG Award of Excellence. I encourage you
to consider nominating a deserving colleague. Here's what the ACE Web site says
about the award:
"The Award of Excellence recognizes individuals who have demonstrated excellence in the SIG area as well as leadership and involvement in ACE. A recipient may be either a current or a past member of the SIG. Nominees may be nominated by anyone in ACE, or they may nominate themselves."
Go to http://www.aceweb.org/award/excellence.html for more details, a link to the nomination form, and a list of past winners. Thanks in advance to Kyle McCaskill, PubSIG vice chair-elect, for coordinating this year's process.
5. Proposals for 2006 Quebec City Meeting
Thanks to all of you who submitted proposals for breakout or poster sessions at the 2006 ACE conference in Quebec City June 2-6. Those involved in putting the conference together are busy outlining the program and evaluating the proposals. Final decisions about what will be included will be made in January. If you haven't already done so, check out the conference Web site at http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/ace2006/.
Much work is being done already to ensure another great conference in an amazing location.
The 2005 meeting of the National Resource Management Officers drew the largest attendance in the organization's 10-year history. This year's meeting was in beautiful Corvallis, Oregon, home of Oregon State University. I had the privilege of attending and am pleased to report a very useful and practical exchange of ideas and practices. A few casual notes and observations.
Participants were also invited to attend the regular meeting of the Pacific Northwest Publishing Committee, the longest running publishing group in the Extension system. Thanks to Evie Engel, Andrea Dailey, and Carlea Freeman for hosting a wonderful meeting and a delightful trip to the Pacific Northwest. It was a great experience, and now I know where those beautiful Douglas fir Christmas trees come from.
Hats off to our colleagues in the ACE Writing SIG for a very interesting ongoing feature: Grammar Hints. About once a month, a member of the SIG submits a few paragraphs dealing with a sticky or challenging grammar issue. Topics have ranged from "Putting Modifiers in their Rightful Places" to "Why Was the Road Crossed by the Chicken?" The current topic is "When to use e.g. and i.e." and is available at http://www.aceweb.org/sigs/writing/grammar.php. Past hints are available in Archived Grammar Hints at http://www.aceweb.org/sigs/writing/grammar_archive.php. I can assure you that all grammar geeks will enjoy these fun tips.
