Work or play in Lake Tahoe?

At the ACE conference next June, the Program Committee is offering each SIG Wednesday afternoon (probably 1-5 p.m.) in which they can choose to:

- offer a program of some sort, or
- see the sights (and casinos) of Lake Tahoe

This time slot is in addition to the three sessions we'll get to fill with Publishing topics during the rest of the conference. What's your pleasure for that time slot - professional development or personal relaxation? Or some of both?

***Please e-mail me ( d-bowen@tamu.edu ) to let me know how you think the Publishing SIG should plan for this period. Thanks!

First step to world domination

I'm sad to report that Natalie Johnson of New Mexico has resigned her position as our SIG's vice chair. Natalie has left NMSU and taken a job as Publications Manager for University Relations at University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. After consulting with her new boss, she felt that membership in another organization was more in line with her new duties.

To take her place, we've moved up Meg Ashman from vice chair-elect. Now we need someone to fill Meg's shoes as vice chair-elect. Would you be interested in serving or know someone you'd like to nominate?

Natalie's already done most of the work for the position for this year, but we'd like to bring a new officer on board now so he/she can become acquainted with the joys and ... er ... lesser joys of SIG leadership. Once you've served as vice chair-elect, you'll move up to vice chair the following year and then ascend to the throne of Publishing SIG chair the third year. After that, who knows? POTUS?

The three officers enjoy a collegial phone conference every month or so; help plan the publishing offerings at the ACE conference; attend to changes in the Critique & Awards program; and keep the Web page updated. We divvy up these chores so that no one has an onerous burden.

Won't you join our happy band? The duties are relatively few and the rewards are plenty, in camaraderie with folks across the country and in making the SIG useful to all members.

***Please e-mail any nominations or self-nominations to me at d-bowen@tamu.edu. Thanks!

Award nominees to be sought

Begin thinking now of a deserving ACE member to nominate this winter for the ACE Publishing SIG Award of Excellence. This award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated excellence in the Publishing SIG area as well as leadership and involvement in ACE. A recipient may be either a current or past member of the SIG. (If you previously nominated an excellent candidate who was not selected, consider renominating that individual.)

The actual call for nominations will be in late January, when ACE Headquarters sends out the nomination form. If you have any questions, contact Meg Ashman (meg.ashman@uvm.edu; phone 802-656-0300).

Session idea on RSS technology

An idea for a session on RSS technology at Lake Tahoe has been proposed by Rhonda Conlon, director of Extension Information Technology in the ag college at North Carolina State University. She wants to know if anyone in our SIG would be interested in pursuing this idea with her. She writes:

"RSS is a newish technology for news syndication and other purposes that will impact both the IT and the Publications folks. Many commercial sites already use this (Yahoo, U.S. News). It's going to be a major tool for facilitating sharing of information and collaboration. You may know more about this than I do as I'm still learning about it and we're just beginning to implement it at NCSU to share news. If it's new to you, here is some background.

"There are some people within our system who might be able to speak to this and I also know of a news person in San Diego who spoke at a XML conference recently. Maybe if we pooled our meager SIG funds ($300 each), we could bring someone in to do a presentation on this. And maybe other SIGs would find this interesting enough to help us."

***Please let Rhonda know if you're interested. rhonda_conlon@ncsu.edu
