Publishing SIG-sponsored Breakout Sessions Proposed for ACE/KC 2003
Publishing SIG-sponsored Breakout Sessions Proposed for ACE/KC 2003
Hi, Publishing SIG members.
Many thanks to those of you who sent in your ideas for Publishing SIG-sponsored
breakout sessions for the ACE 2003 meeting in Kansas City. Fellow PubSIG
leaders Diane Bowen, Natalie Johnson, other PubSIG members, and I have
distilled those ideas into the following three proposals, which we have
submitted to the program committee. The three SIG-sponsored sessions are
listed below. You can see a full listing of proposed sessions at the ACE
2003 web site (http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/kc2003/BreakoutResults.asp). And
if you think of a useful breakout session topic but you don't see it on
that list, please go ahead and propose it yourself. Even if you're not
an expert on the topic, you can seek out someone who is or (dare I say
it?) educate yourself! Best wishes for peace and renewal of the spirit
over the holidays.
Your SIG chair,
Jim Coats

PIXELS OR PRINT? TRENDS IN PRINT AND ELECTRONIC PUBLISHING - (possible
joint session with Graphic Design or IT) At this session we will discuss
the advantages and disadvantages of print and electronic publishing and
the trends in these for governmental documents. Among the topics we'll
consider are costs (production and distribution), revenues, audience reach,
marketing, reader capabilities (such as technological limitations), editing
(ease of making changes after it's published), time, standards (i.e., credibility
factors) and other factors (such as ease of plagiarism, which may or may
not be a big concern for many governmental agencies).
-
PUBLISHING A MAGAZINE IN PRINT AND ONLINE - (possible joint session with
Graphic Design) A panel discussion of the current hot issues faced by people
who publish magazines both in print and online. One topic is how to coordinate
the two versions. Other issues to be discussed include the latest design
trends, cutting production costs, use of advertising both in print and
online and evaluation -- How can you prove anybody's reading and that the
magazine is doing your organization any good? Session leaders: Linda Benedict,
Louisiana, and Owen Roberts, Ontario, Canada (Panel members to be named
later)
-
AN INTRODUCTION TO NRMO - (possible joint session with Marketing) At this
session, we'll learn about what the National Resource Management Officers
are all about. NRMO leaders will give an introduction and history of this
group that includes anyone who produces, promotes or distributes Extension
publications for land-grant universities. Members tend to be warehouse
managers and/or customer service staff, but publication editors, account
technicians, inventory software programmers and department heads have participated,
too. Discussion also will touch on areas of mutual interest with ACE and
ideas for future collaborative involvement. (Session leaders yet to be
identified.)
