ACE
Editing Workshop will feature UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO’S SUSAN ALLEN and MERRIAM
WEBSTER’S PETER SOKOLOWSKI!
Monday, June 9, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Traverse City, before the ACE Annual Meeting
We are very excited to announce that the instructor for the ACE Editing Workshop in Traverse City will be SUSAN ALLEN, a long-serving instructor for the University of Chicago Graham School’s editing program. Allen also trains editors in corporations and nonprofits on behalf of the University of Chicago Press. In addition, she is the managing editor of the American Journal of Sociology---one of the oldest and largest scholarly journals published by the University of Chicago Press. She has been a professional writer and editor for over nineteen years. Her experience includes time as a full-time copyeditor at the Press's Journals Division, and she has also worked as a freelance copyeditor.
Also speaking at the workshop will be PETER SOKOLOWSKI, Merriam-Webster’s Editor-at-Large. Sokolowski has extensive speaking and media experience, and has worked on the M-W Collegiate Dictionary as well as their bilingual dictionary online. He’s also the voice of M-W Online’s Word of the Day podcast!
3. Who Deserves This Year’s Award of Excellence?
Please start thinking of deserving colleagues to nominate for the ACE Publishing SIG Award of Excellence. The formal call for nominations will go out in January and nomination forms will be due February 15. We would like to have many nominations from which to choose our 2008 winner.
Details about the Award of Excellence can be found at http://www.aceweb.org/award/excellence.html.
4. PubSIG session proposals for the ACE 2008 Meeting
The deadline for submitting oral presentation and poster proposals for the ACE 2008 annual meeting in Traverse City, Mich. is Tuesday, January 15. For details about the ACE 2008 annual conference, visit http://www.ace08.org.
Have you ever attended an ACE annual conference and said to yourself, “I wish somebody would have talked about _____”?
This is your chance to do something about it.
For details on submitting a proposal, visit http://www.ace08.org/default.aspx?tabid=2219.
Or, join us, your PubSIG leadership, in a session proposal we’re considering: a panel discussion on “Writing and Editing for the Web,” in which members discuss their experiences and lessons learned about writing and editing for the Web. If you are interested or think this is a worthwhile topic, contact Kevin Leigh Smith, PubSIG vice chair, at kevlsmith@purdue.edu. If there is enough interest and we get volunteers, Kevin will submit the proposal for the panel.
5. 2008 ACE Critique & Awards Program
All entries must be received at ACE headquarters by Friday, January 25. For the rulebook, entry form, and categories, visit http://www.aceweb.org/award/critique.html. To see past C&A Gold Award entries, visit http://www.aceweb.org/award/index.html.
And while you’re preparing your C&A entry, why not repurpose your entry so you can share it with other members of the PubSIG? The PubSIG is looking for volunteers to submit entries for our online Case Studies idea bank.
One of the most interesting things at the ACE meeting in Albuquerque last June was when members shared highlights of their award-winning projects during the PubSIG business meeting. If you felt the same way, consider taking a minute or two to turn your C&A entry into a Case Study that other members can learn from.
For details about the Case Study scheme, visit http://www.aceweb.org/sigs/publishing/1007news.htm#4.
That's it for now. Remember, the PubSIG listserv allows you to ask questions and take advantage of the experience of others in our field. Just e-mail ace_pubsig_mg@www.aceweb.org. Your PubSIG colleagues are just an e-mail away!
