1. GREETINGS
This is a busy and fun time of year for everyone. Shopping, cooking, decorating,
traveling -- the fun just goes on and on. This time of year means a lot of
things happening in the Publishing SIG as well. Thanks to all who participated
in the recent conversation call and the surveys conducted through the listserv.
Read on to find out what else is planned for you and don't forget that it is
time to renew your ACE membership for 2006. If you did not receive a renewal
form in the mail, you can find one at
http://www.aceweb.org/membersh/renewal.pdf. Return the form to ACE
headquarters by January 31, 2006, if you want to be listed in the annual ACE
Membership Directory.
2. Welcome New Member
ACE and the Publishing SIG are pleased to welcome a new member, Rebecca Erdkamp.
She is an education and outreach specialist for the Nebraska Forest Service. She
is a member of the writing, publishing, marketing, and media relations special
interest groups. Her e-mail address is
rerdkamp2@unl.edu.
Welcome, Rebecca!
3. Talk to the Judge
It's time to start thinking about your entries in the 2006 ACE Critique and
Awards Program. Again this year the Publishing SIG is inviting one of the judges
to be our guest for a conversation call. Last year's call was very well
received, and we're sure you won't want to miss this year's opportunity to chat
with one of the judges. We are confirming the details now. Watch for more in a
few days.
4. Real People, Real Success
I have heard wonderful reports about the ACE writing workshop held in October in
Mississippi. If you haven't already done so, read the excellent Signals article
by Barbara McBreen:
http://www.aceweb.org/publications/SignalsSeptOct05.pdf. Look closely and
you will see a picture of your Publishing SIG vice chair, Helen White!
5. Social Responsibility Conversation Call
In late September, Jim Coats from the University of California moderated our
first conversation call this year. The topic was a continuation of the Social
Responsibility Roundtable, a breakout session held in San Antonio.
Notes from the call. Thanks to Jim for his efforts
in this area. More is on the horizon!
6. Award of Excellence
Please start thinking now of deserving colleagues to nominate for the ACE
Publishing SIG Award of Excellence. The formal call for nominations will go out
in January. A nominee should be either a current or past member of the
Publishing SIG, should be an ACE member for the current year, and should have
been an ACE member for at least five years (not necessarily consecutive).
Any ACE member--active or retired--may be nominated by any ACE member.
Nominees must not currently be serving as chair or vice chair of the Publishing
SIG, nor serving as ACE president, president-elect, or vice president.
Nomination forms, past winners, and a description of the award and its criteria
are at www.aceweb.org. Select ACE Awards
under Programs and Products, and look for Award of Excellence in the listing.
7. Quebec City
Excitement is growing for the next ACE annual conference to be held in June 2006
in Quebec City, Canada. "Excellence en communications" is the theme. Whet your
appetite at the conference Web site:
http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/ace2006/.
8. -30- : "Revenge of the Grammarians"
Thanks to Judy Rude for sharing an article she read in the November 13
Washington Post's Book World. "Revenge of the Grammarians -- Mangled idioms,
vagrant commas and other things up with which we will not put," by Dennis
Drabelle, a contributing editor. Judy tells us that Drabelle expounds how his
sampling of new pretenders are "wanna be's" to the throne of Fowler's English
Usage and Strunk and White's "The Elements of Style." Judy says the article is
somewhat humorous and she thinks our ACE grammarians will enjoy it. Go to the
Washington Post Web site to read the full article:
http://www.washingtonpost.com. You
will need to register. Judy finds that searching the Post via the article's
title is faster than searching by author. Check it out!
