January 2000 ACE Pub SIG Newsletter

Deadlines, deadlines, deadlines...

Better hurry! Entries for this year's C&A must be postmarked by Saturday, January 29. ACE 2000 dues must be paid to enter (you can include your check along with your entry). Also remember that Monday, January 31 is the deadline for submitting session proposals for the USACC in Washington DC this July.

More C&A:

Remember that we had a new class approved this year for Electronic Publications (Class 26). We have also been busy responding to suggestions for updating class descriptions and judging forms. Be sure to read them carefully when submitting. We had reports from last year's judges of entries that suffered because they did not follow the guidelines. We also want to hear from you about your experience this year (good or bad) so that we can adjust guidelines and instructions for the judges in the future.

A small victory worth reporting is that Martha Filipic went to bat for us and persuaded the board that, even though retirees that are lifetime ACE members (in this instance a past president) are technically ineligible to be judges, we should allow them to contribute their expertise and remain connected with the organization if they have remained professionally active. The guidelines will be rewritten for next year allowing them to serve as judges. Thanks Martha!

USACC Planning

Following is the preliminary schedule for the July meeting in Washington DC. As you can see, there is no specific SIG day or half day this year, so this Monday's deadline is your only chance to incorporate topics that you want to see covered in DC.

Also, Ashley has requested that the SIG leaders share the proposals that have been submitted from their areas. So please send me the title(s) and a brief one paragraph description of your proposal. There may be opportunities for SIG partnering.

More deadlines?

The Publishing SIG Award of Excellence nomination is due March 1. I will be sending out guidelines next week for you to submit names which the SIG officers and regional reps will consider. So look through your directory and begin listing who you think has demonstrated excellence and leadership in the Publishing SIG and involvement in ACE.

Comings and Goings:

We send our thanks and best wishes to Melanie Spencer, who in January resigned her position in Maine to become a full-time mom. She will continue to help us as a C&A judge this year. Debby Weitzel has graciously agreed to step up from vice-chair elect to vice-chair. Please consider whether you are ready to contribute as a SIG officer. We will need to designate both a vice-chair and a vice-chair elect when we meet in July.

We also welcome Gene Hettel as international regional rep.

Please well the following new SIG members:
* Jesse R. Ewing, Graphic Designer, Ohio State University, ewing.40@osu.edu
* Susan Staggenborg, Assistant Editor, Kansas State University, sjstagge@oz.oznet.ksu.edu

Web Page and Discussion Topics:

Thanks to Meg Ashman, Kim Parker and Sue Keller for updating the SIG web page. Please take a look. Let us know if you would like anything added.

Several items have been mentioned as discussion topics. Many of us are now dealing with e-commerce and intellectual property/copyright questions. This email list is a forum for a discussion of these issues. We can also place useful sites on the web page.

An Invitation from the Graphic Design and Writing SIGs:

The Graphic Design SIG and the Writing SIG are co-sponsoring a 12-week workshop and chat room based on "The Artist's Way at Work, Riding the Dragon." This sequel to The Artist's Way, will start on Monday, February 7. "The Artist's Way at Work, Riding the Dragon" is specifically designed to address creativity in the workplace, no matter what type of work you do. So, get your book and notebook ready and prepare to start on another creative journey. This is a great chance to get to know other creative ACE members and talk about creative issues in the workplace. This is a self-directed workshop. The chat room is provided as a way to share learning and insights along the way.

How it works:
Start chapter 1 on your own on Monday, February 7. We will "meet" in the chat room for discussion on the following Friday, February, 11, at the times listed below. Finish the chapter on Sat and Sun. Start chapter 2 on Monday. That's it.

The book is:
The Artist's Way at Work, Riding the Dragon, by Mark Bryan, with Julia Cameron and Catherine Allen. Quill/William Morrow & Company, Inc.

The Chat Room address is:
http://www.ag.ohio-state.edu/~artsig/
