October 2007 ACE Publishing SIG Newsletter
For information, contact Kyle McCaskill, Chair, PubSIG.

Greetings PubSIG members! This is a busy time of year for many of us, and the ACE Publishing Special Interest Group is no exception. Read on to see how we have been busy planning professional development opportunities and thinking about how we can all better support one another in our work.

Fun fact:
There are currently 681 ACE members and 180 of them belong to the Publishing SIG!*
We're a BIG SIG!

In This Issue:

  1. Highlights from PubSIG fall report to ACE Board
  2. Editing "superworkshop" in Traverse City
  3. New PubSIG members
  4. Let's build the PubSIG idea bank already!

1. Highlights From PubSIG Fall Report

Based on your input, we recommended the following revisions to the Critique and Awards Publishing Classes:
a) Add this sentence to the end of the third paragraph of the ACE Critique & Awards Program’s General Rules and Instructions: "Judges have the option of disqualifying any entry that does not have the required elements, or for which the supplemental description exceeds two pages."
b) Change the language of Class 21 to read as follows:
Class 21 — Technical publications. Submit one copy of a publication prepared as a research report, special publication, scholarly journal, brochure or other printed material focusing on research. The audience may be scientists in agricultural or related research, professional workers in education and industry, or others interested in technical subjects. Entries will be evaluated for editorial quality, format, graphics, photography and reproduction.
(Changes are in the first sentence. We inserted "scholarly journal" after "special publication," and changed "a research program" to "research.")

New C&A Class for educational campaigns?
We also received a recommendation from among the membership for a new C&A class for "educational campaigns." Many of us work on a number of different projects for the same educational campaign (book, CD, Web site, poster, promotional item, and so on). As of now, there is no C&A class that recognizes such work in its entirety. During the coming year we will be asking you for more feedback on this to determine if this should be recommended to the ACE Board.

Three-year professional development plan
This year, for the first time, the PubSIG report included a three-year plan to enhance the SIG’s usefulness to members in terms of professional development. In addition to the editing workshop and the development of the Case Studies idea bank, we will be revamping the Web site and surveying all of you to see what you want from the SIG leadership. We will also be researching ways to use technology so that SIG members can interact, share, and rely on one another more, in a way that is a help rather than a hindrance to doing our jobs.

2. PubSIG Editing "Superworkshop" in Traverse City: Mark Your Calendars!

Our workshop planning committee, composed of Sandra Clarke, Judy Winn, Helen White, Joy Landis, and Kyle McCaskill, and ably led by Janet Bryron, has been hard at work planning a professional development opportunity. To ease time, travel, and cost pressures, we have scheduled it in conjunction with the annual ACE meeting.
Mark your calendar: Monday, June 9, in Traverse City, Michigan, start the ACE Annual Meeting off with an all-day intensive editing workshop, including a refresher on copyediting, structural editing, editing for special audiences, and getting beneath the surface to more substantive issues. More information to come!

4. Let's build the PubSIG idea bank already!

For the last year or so, we’ve been talking about building an idea bank of projects created by ACE PubSIG members. We all agree that we learn a lot from our colleagues’ projects and that we always get great ideas from sharing. PubSIG Vice Chair Kevin Leigh Smith is getting us started! Read his description of case study submissions [PDF], as well as his own case study of the pocket guide with 42 covers!

That's it for now. Remember, the PubSIG listserv allows you to ask questions and take advantage of the experience of others in our field. Just e-mail ace_pubsig_mg@www.aceweb.org. The PubSIG membership is just an e-mail away!
