October 2000 ACE Pub SIG Newsletter
I hope all of you are enjoying fall in your state. Colorado is having a sunny, Indian Summer, that is, after we survived our 7 inches of snow last month. Our SIG is up and running, with many things either in the works or already accomplished. Our new SIG leaders are myself as chair, Judy Rude as vice-chair (USDA), and Jim Coats (University of California) as vice-chair elect. We are keeping the same regional reps (see below), however we have an opening in the southern region if anyone would like to volunteer. If so, please contact me at: dweitzel@coop.ext.colostate.edu .
Northeast: Meg Ashman, University of Vermont
D.C: Judy Rude, USDA
Southern: vacant
North Central: Nancy Peavler, Kansas State University
Western: Debbie Weitzel, Colorado State University
International: Gene Hettel, IRRI, Philippines
C & A UPDATE
Classes: Our SIG has been busy the last month finalizing our updates to the ACE Critique and Awards program. The biggest changes came by combining Class 21a: One- to three-color periodicals with 21b: Four-color periodicals, and renaming the new Class 21: Magazines. We also combined our special report classes (24a: 1-3 color and 24b: 4 color) into Class 24: Special Reports. Both combinations were due to limited entries. The judges evaluation forms have a special note on them not to consider economy unless it is mentioned as a stated purpose on the entry form. We also added "design" as a category for evaluation for Classes 21, 22a, 22b, 23, and 24, and have made a special note in the Editing Class 25, that "showing editing marks on an entry is NOT required." You will be able to see these changes and a few other minor changes to the judging forms on the web site as soon as ACE compiles all the SIG changes. (http://www.aceweb.org/c_a/classdes.html)
Judges: We have two new judges for Classes 19: Direct Mail, 20: Newsletters and 25: Editing. Susie Franco, owner of PageDesign, a graphic design business in Moscow, Idaho, will be judging 19 and 20. Cara Neth, assistant to the Colorado State University President, Albert Yates, will be judging Class 25: Editing. Cara has worked in the CSU public relations office as a writer and editor. Look for both their names and backgrounds to be added to the C & A Judges website in the near future. (http://www.aceweb.org/c_a/2000judges.html).
Judges for Publishing SIG C & A:
Our SIG, along with the other SIGS, will be responsible for planning many of the sessions at the ACE/NETC meeting in Toronto. This year ACE is asking each member to submit proposals for a session directly to Sandra Born (born.1@osu.edu) and the deadline to submit a proposal is November 15th. Procedures for submitting proposals are on the meeting website.
So far, various publishing SIG members will be submitting proposals for sessions on: digital imaging, copyright and photo releases, and e-commerce (tech and marketing side). I encourage all of you to think about what you, as a publishing professional, would like to learn more about in Toronto. Our breakout sessions will be at the Rogers Communications Centre (a short walk from the Delta Chelsea Hotel), which is part of Ryerson Polytechnic University. You might want to look at Ryerson's Continuing Education program Web site. (http://ce-online.ryerson.ca/ce/). If there are any topics or areas you are interested in, we can contact them and plan a session. (Most of you probably received a similar message from ACE about the sessions available through the Digital Media Workshop series taught at Ryerson (http://ag.arizona.edu/ace/toronto.html). If you do see any topics of interest, feel free to contact me.
We also plan to have a working SIG session for our members. This session can be whatever we want it to be, discussing items of interest or challenges you are facing, networking, etc. I will be asking for your help to plan this session in the near future. Keep in mind that we have the option of looking for professionals in the Toronto area, or at Ryerson, who can come and speak to our group.
