1. GREETINGS

Autumn has finally arrived -- it's my favorite time of the year.

Admittedly, our dose of the season here in the Deep South pales in comparison to the splendor enjoyed by our colleagues in northern regions, but we still relish the bounty and beauty of the season. The beginning of a new school year also means the beginning of a new year in the ACE Publishing SIG.

Interesting things have already been happening in the SIG: listserv discussions and surveys have been conducted and results will be posted on the Web site soon, reports have been filed with the board, talk has begun for the PubSIG to host a super workshop in the next couple of years, and two conversation calls are already planned with the first moderated by Jim Coats happening next week. See details below.

The Publishing SIG exists for you. Vice Chair Helen White, Vice Chair-Elect Kyle McCaskill, and I welcome suggestions and comments. We are looking forward to a productive and exciting year.

2. Welcome New Member

ACE and the PubSIG are pleased to welcome a new member, Faith Colburn, in North Platte, Nebraska. She shares this information about herself:

"I've had the luxury of employment that serves my values all of my adult life. I've worked in conservation with the State of Nebraska, Game and Parks Commission. With a Lutheran social ministry organization, I had the opportunity to give voice to people who are rarely heard (people with developmental disabilities). I expect my work with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources will provide similar rewards."

Here is Faith's address:

Faith A Colburn
Communication Specialist
UNL West Central Research and Extension Center
461 West University Drive
North Platte, NE 69101

Check out her Web site with a photograph at www.fcolburn.com.

Welcome, Faith!

3. ACE/NETC/ACT/EVP Conference

All who attended the ACE/NETC/ACT/EVP Conference in San Antonio enjoyed a real taste of Texas hospitality and culture. Those Texas folks really know how to welcome people to their state. Twenty-one PubSIG members wiped the sleep from our eyes and attended the early morning business meeting June 2. The highlight again was the Trading Aces and Disgraces swap meet in which we shared successes, joys, and frustrations faced in our daily work in the publishing arena. Thanks to outgoing PubSIG chair Meg Ashman for taking notes on this session (and for the many other things she graciously and expertly did for the PubSIG). Check out notes from the entire business meeting at http://www.aceweb.org/sigs/publishing/busmtg05.htm.

All who wanted to join their colleagues for dinner one evening met after the Development Fund Auction and hit the Riverwalk in search of Mexican food. Some in the group had a taste for German food so we went our separate ways.

4. Pub SIG Web Site and Conference Session Summaries

Thanks to Cindy Eves-Thomas for agreeing to continue posting information to our PubSIG Web site. Thanks also to Sue Keller for agreeing to continue helping us keep material updated.

Summaries from many of the publishing-related sessions at the ACE/NETC/ACT/EVP conference are posted on the Web site at http://www.aceweb.org/sigs/publishing/sessions.htm. Our goal is to make these available so those who could not attend the conference in San Antonio or who did not attend a particular session due to a scheduling conflict, will have access to the information. Thanks again to those who volunteered to take notes.

Here's what we have so far:

5. September 29 Conversation Call

Last year the PubSIG began having conversation calls to share ideas and information. We are continuing these calls again this year. It's easy -- just call in and participate in the discussion or just listen. We will post notes on the Web site.

Jim Coats from the University of California has agreed to moderate our first call this year. The topic will actually be a continuation of the Social Responsibility Roundtable, a breakout session held in San Antonio. Jim whets our appetite for the discussion with the following:

"Last summer a group of folks from the Publishing SIG got together at the San Antonio meeting for an interesting roundtable discussion of ethical issues and quandaries that we face in our professional lives. We invite other PubSIG members to join in the conversation on the phone on September 29. You are welcome to share your experiences or ideas, or just to listen in. You can find notes from our San Antonio session at http://www.aceweb.org/sigs/publishing/sessions.htm under June 05." -- Jim

Helen has made arrangements for a one-hour 16-person call Thursday, September 29 at 3 p.m. (EDT), 2 p.m. (CDT), 1 p.m. (MDT), and 12 noon (PDT). The number is 1-979-847-9186 for folks calling in via long distance. People on the Texas A&M University campus should dial 182, listen for dial-tone "beeps," dial 99992, listen for beeps, dial 186, and then you're in. Folks in College Station, Texas, calling from off-campus should just dial 847-9186.

6. -30- : Why Can't Johnny Read?

Carol Whatley, former chair of the PubSIG, recently shared this link with her colleagues here at Auburn University. The article is a thought provoking discussion of serif vs sans serif type. I'd love to hear your comments on the subject. (http://www.dennyhatch.com/pdfs/Why_Johnny_Cannot_Read.pdf )
