Range of topics featured in breakout sessions

In addition to a number of breakout sessions (including some fairly technical ones) with publishing as the major or secondary focus that will be presented by individual ACE members, the conference will feature several indepth PubSIG-planned sessions. These evolved from the PubSIG's November conversation call.

One 110-minute session on Wednesday morning, coordinated by Evie Engel and including Tom Knecht and Lisa Jasa, will focus on "The Future of Publishing: Convergence of Media." Participants can expect discussions on how to retool themselves to broaden capability of media, how editors/writers/designers might interact more effectively with software developers and video producers, and how communication professionals can capitalize on the convergence of media to deliver messages effectively.

Two back-to-back 50-minute sessions, coordinated by Gloria Holcombe with help from other PubSIG members, will focus on copyright issues. In "Copyright 101," Peter Vankevich from the U.S. Copyright Office will provide an overview of copyright law and rights and will address exceptions (e.g., fair use in education--including distance ed), registration for online works and other copyright issues related to the web, granting and seeking permission, licensing materials and setting up restrictions, and copyright ownership issues in educational institutions and government agencies. In the second (follow-up) session, "Copyright from the print and web publishers' point of view," ACE panelists will interact with Vankevich and a copyright lawyer from Oregon on specific copyright problems and how they have dealt with them.

* * *  Plea to PubSIG members: Note takers needed - respond by May 25 * * *

We need volunteers to take notes at sessions with publishing as the primary focus, so we can share those notes with our colleagues who aren't able to attend. Won't you step forward and offer to take notes for one of the following sessions--particularly if you're attending the session anyway? This could be your opportunity to contribute to the PubSIG this year!

Please let me know--by Wednesday, May 25--which session/s you will cover. Thanks.

Idea exchange on tap for PubSIG "business meeting"

After a brief discussion about what the PubSIG has done this past year and what we might want to do in the future, our business meeting will feature "Trading Aces and Disgraces," an idea swap in which each of us discusses an experience (success or "learning-intensive" failure), resource, product, professional tool, or professional development opportunity that might be useful or instructive to fellow SIG members.

Please be thinking about what you can share in about 2 to 3 minutes.

Social responsibility roundtable to discuss ethical issues in publishing

Join Jim Coats and other PubSIG members on Wednesday at 3:20 p.m. for a lively and thoughtful social responsibility roundtable. Discussion will focus on ethical issues in publishing.

ACT roundtable offers students glimpse of publishing career opportunities

Glenda Freeman and I will be participating in a roundtable on publishing career opportunities for ACT (Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow) members attending the ACE/NETC Conference from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 1. If you find you're available, please drop by and join us. This is a great chance for us to share experiences, perspectives, and advice with interested and motivated young people who are considering entering our profession.

QUERIES ABOUT DISASTER RESOURCES AND E-COMMERCE YIELD USEFUL RESPONSES

In mid-April, Debby Weitzel sent a message to the PubSIG  listserv with the following question about e-commerce: "How many, if any of you, have their publication inventory connected to their commerce site so that the inventory gets deleted when someone orders online? If you do, can you tell me the name of your inventory program and a contact of someone you work with that could explain it to me?"

And earlier this month, Dennis Hinkamp sent a message to the PubSIG listserv asking about availability of disaster/emergency resources.

Both Debby and Dennis have compiled the responses they received:

PARTING WORDS

It's been a bang-up year for our SIG, thanks to the hard work of the leadership team and those of you who participated in all kinds of ways--taking part in our new conversation calls, planning professional development sessions for the ACE/NETC conference, responding to queries about the Critique and Awards Program, volunteering to be our web master (thanks, Cin!), and more. In San Antonio, I'll be turning over the gavel (so to speak) to the very capable hands of Glenda Freeman, the incoming chair of the PubSIG. With the leadership team of Glenda, Helen White (incoming vice chair), and Kyle McCaskill (incoming vice chair-elect), and with the rest of you PubSIG members behind them, I believe the future of the PubSIG is exceptionally bright. Best of luck to you all!
