Greetings and salutations

Hello, everyone!
I hope your Monday is going swimmingly. As your new SIG chair, I plan to continue the tradition of last year's leader, Jim Coats of California, of sending out periodical newsletters about pertinent events, trends and ideas in our SIG and beyond. This is this year's inaugural issue.
Our Publishing SIG is 173 members strong, and it offers you a wealth of knowledge and experience to tap into. If you're being vexed by a question or problem about publishing, please give the SIG members a shout via the Pub SIG ListServ and you're sure to get some valuable advice.
Your SIG leaders - Vice Chair Natalie Johnson (NM) and Vice Chair Elect Meg Ashman (VT) and I - welcome you to the 2003-04 ACE year and look forward to serving you in the months ahead.

News from the KC business meeting

Colleagues from across the nation (and world) gathered in Kansas City in June for our annual SIG business meeting. A report on what went on in the meeting is posted at
www.uvm.edu/extension/acepubsig/ under the heading: Notes from SIG Business Meetings.

How may we serve you?
Goals for next year

What new skills do you think you'll be needing in the coming year? What are the challenges your department is facing that you'd like ideas on how to address? What trends do you see emerging in the communications field that you'd like to learn more about?
We're looking for suggestions on how Publishing SIG can be as useful to you as possible. Please help us help you by telling us about what you'd like the SIG to do for you this year.
Our deadline for submitting goals to the ACE board is Sept. 2. I know, I know, that's really short notice. But if you can, please reply to this e-mail with your ideas by the end of the day Thursday, Aug. 28.
Here's one idea that came out of our business meeting: To generate ListServ discussions among members, we could send out occasional queries on topics of interest to the members.
Another idea was to improve upon our Web page by adding links to helpful sites and references.
Once we've heard from everyone interested, the SIG will hammer out goals for this year and set about achieving them.

Missed the KC conference?

For those of you who couldn't join us at the ACE annual conference this year, some of those attending took notes. We managed to cover on four sessions:

- Grammar Training for Extension Faculty and Staff via WebCT
- How to Catch the Urban Media's Eye
- Introduction to NRMO: A Way to Broaden Your Publishing Program
- Paper or Pixels? Comparing Print and Electronic Publishing

The reports are posted on our SIG's Web page at: www.uvm.edu/extension/acepubsig/ under the heading: ACE Session Summaries of Interest to PubSIG.

Professional development opportunities

- NMRO annual meeting
Sept. 21-23, 2003, College Station, Texas

Want to learn more about e-commerce, cost recovery, distribution, marketing, customer service, warehouse staffing and other similar issues? These are some of the topics discussed at previous annual meetings of the National Resource Management Officers organization.
The group includes publication distribution managers, inventory software programmers, customer service staff, editors, marketing specialists and publication warehouse staff. The meeting consists of roundtable discussions of publication distribution issues.
The low registration cost of $65 helps make this conference a big-bang-for-your-buck professional development opportunity. A tour of the George Bush Presidential Museum will also be offered.
For more information, contact Debbie Mitchell at dlmitchell@tamu.edu or 888.900.2577.

- Media Relations Made Easy in the Big Easy
September 28-30, 2003, New Orleans

This workshop will follow a "train-the-trainer" format to teach you how to conduct more effective media relations training for your administrators, faculty, staff and others. Participants will leave with a media relations training guide containing educational modules on such topics as why media work is important, what to do when media call, writing news releases and columns, getting to know the media, special considerations for TV / interview tips and strategies, keeping crises contained / crisis communication and how to communicate about controversial issues. They also will receive supplemental materials, such as a videotape, PowerPoint presentations, teaching outlines and fact sheets, to help in conducting training sessions.

Bonus quote about words

"Beware the conversationalist who adds 'in other words.' He is merely starting afresh."
