......................... New leader nomination
We have a candidate for the office of vice-chair-elect of the ACE
Publishing SIG! Carol Whatley of Alabama has nominated her colleague,
Glenda Freeman. In her nomination letter, Carol wrote: "She's an editor
in my department and just terrific." In addition to having been a
member of the Pub SIG for several years, Glenda:
- Participated in teams that won gold and silver awards in the ACE
C&A program.
- Developed a new member survey for ACE, sent it out, compiled the
responses, and wrote a detailed report for the membership committee.
- Was instrumental in developing the ACE mentorship program.
The ballot appears below. The election will be conducted by e-mail,
starting now and ending at 7 p.m. CDT April 9.
***Cast your vote by e-mail using the ballot below (one vote per PubSIG
member), addressed to me (d-bowen@tamu.edu) . The candidate who
receives a majority of the votes cast by PubSIG members will be the
winner.
Besides your votes, you are welcome to send in any comments about the
candidate and her suitability for the position.
........................ Official ballot
Select one candidate for the office of Publishing SIG Vice-Chair-Elect:

......................... Another nominee needed
Because Meg Ashman and the vice chair-elect will be moving up to the
SIG chair and vice chair posts in June, we'll also need a nominee for
next year's vice chair-elect.
***If you would like to serve, or know someone who would, please send
the nomination to me at d-bowen@tamu.edu by April 15.
The three SIG officers meet by phone conference every month or so. The
duties include helping plan the publishing offerings at the ACE
conference; attending to changes in the Critique & Awards program;
and keeping the Web page updated. The tasks are divided so that the
time requirement is not burdensome.
For those of you who, like me, are "reluctant (at best) leaders," I'd
like to encourage you to give this a shot. I've truly enjoyed my stint
as a SIG leader. It gave me a chance to get better acquainted with many
of my colleagues across the nation and it was a fun, interesting and
low-pressure way to acquire and practice new leadership skills. I
highly recommend it!
......................... Tahoe time
Remember that the annual ACE conference will be held June 20-24 in Lake
Tahoe, NV. At the conference, you'll have excellent professional
development and networking opportunities in a beautiful setting.
An advanced grammar workshop will be just one of many
publishing-related breakout sessions of interest to PubSIG members.
In addition to the regular business meetings and breakout slots, the
Tahoe program committee offered each SIG the period from 1-5 p.m.
Wednesday to either schedule an additional workshop or field trip, or
to leave open. Our SIG members have chosen to leave this slot free to
give everyone an opportunity to "pursue other learning activities."
......................... Website update
What guidelines do various states have for Extension authors in
crediting other sources of information when writing publications or
developing Web sites for lay audiences? Several members of the PubSIG
weighed in on this question in December, and the results are now posted
on our website (listed under Surveys at http://www.uvm.edu/extension/acepubsig/).
Hats off to survey contributors Jane Brown of Purdue, Jim Coats of
University of California, Dale Evans of University of Hawaii at Manoa,
Cindy Gambill of Fort Valley State University, Jane Honeycutt of
Louisiana State University, Tom Knecht of Mississippi State, Kyle
McCaskill of University of Maine, Diane Noel of University of Idaho,
Carol Whatley of Auburn and Judy Winn of Texas A&M. Thanks also to
Meg Ashman of Vermont, who posed the question, and to Kim Parker of
Vermont, who posted the responses to our website.
