1. Nominate a colleague for the Publishing Award of Excellence

Time is getting short, and we still haven’t received any Award of Excellence nominations. This SIG has 180 talented, experienced professionals! Please don't let deserving colleagues go unrecognized: nominate one for the ACE Publishing SIG Award of Excellence. The award recognizes PubSIG members who have demonstrated excellence in publishing and their leadership and involvement in ACE. Nominees may be current or past PubSIG members.

Nomination forms are due to Sandy Clarke (sclarke@iastate.edu) by February 15. We would like to have many nominations from which to choose our 2008 winner.

Details about the Award of Excellence can be found at www.aceweb.org/award/excellence.html.

2. Case Studies Idea Bank Is on our Web site awaiting your contribution!

For the last year or so, we’ve been talking about building an idea bank of projects created by ACE PubSIG members. We all agree that we learn a lot from our colleagues’ projects and that we always get great ideas from sharing. PubSIG Vice Chair Kevin Leigh Smith got us started; now we need you to participate! Visit the new Case Studies Idea Bank section of the PubSIG Web site. Read "Let's Do It Already" to find out how to submit your own study.

3. Start making plans to attend ACE ’08 in Traverse City

The Web site is up (www.ace08.com), lodging blocks are available for booking, and proposed sessions are currently being reviewed.

4. Meeting Susan Allan and Peter Sokolowski headline the ACE Editing Workshop

The ACE Editing Workshop will take place Monday, June 9, in Traverse City, Michigan, just before the ACE annual meeting. This is shaping up into a once-in-a-lifetime professional development opportunity, at the cost of (depending on what you drive) a couple of tanks of gas! Susan Allan, long-serving instructor for the University of Chicago Graham School’s editing program, will be the instructor. Peter Sokolowski, Merriam-Webster’s editor-at-large, will be the featured speaker.

Make plans to arrive in Traverse City early to update your skills and get a perspective on new words and our evolving language.

5. Welcome to our newest PubSIG member:

Nicole Sloan
For-Sales Managing Editor
University of Florida
SIGs: marketing, publishing, writing
nlsloan@ufl.edu

The Publishing SIG exists to develop and recognize professional skills, and facilitate networking and information sharing among ACE members who work in print or electronic publications. Let’s give a warm PubSIG welcome to Nicole!

6. How do you want your PubSIG news?

We will be conducting a survey about PubSIG newsletters. Be thinking about the kind of information that would be useful to you and how often you’d like to receive it. (For instance, would you like to see professional development stories and tips, profiles of colleagues, etc.?)

7. Reminder: Signals articles are due to the ACE coordinator by February 15.

8. Position opening

Want money, fame, fortune? A great learning experience and being valued by your peers? If the latter appeals to you, consider nominating yourself or a colleague as next year's PubSIG Vice Chair-Elect. The reason that we're the BIGGEST SIG is that we have a large and really vital membership and leadership. Let's keep it going!

That's it for now. Remember, the PubSIG listserv allows you to ask questions and take advantage of the experience of others in our field. Just e-mail ace_pubsig_mg@www.aceweb.org. Your PubSIG colleagues are just an e-mail away!
