February 16 "conversation call" to focus on the hybrid nature of editing
positions
With budget limits and new technologies, many editors are increasingly finding
themselves in somewhat hybrid positions that may require additional expertise in
Web use or design, use of Photoshop, on-line content management or publication
proofing and comment systems, on-line publication sales and marketing, or other
options. How are they managing this stretch or expansion and what
recommendations would they have for others? Conversely, perhaps the role of some
have become more limited, and if so, why and what recommendations might they
offer others.
Join your PubSIG colleagues to discuss this issue during a "conversation
call" scheduled for Wednesday, February 16 at 9 a.m. Pacific, 10 a.m. Mountain,
11 a.m. Central, and 12 noon Eastern. The call will be no longer than an
hour. We'll send you a reminder--with instructions for dialing in--a day or two
before the conference call.
Thanks to Lisa Jasa for suggesting the topic and facilitating the conversation.

Vice chair-elect needed!
We need someone to become the PubSIG vice chair-elect, effective this summer.
Would you be interested in serving or know someone you'd like to nominate?
Please e-mail self-nominations or nominations of others to me at
meg.ashman@uvm.edu
by February 11. Thanks!
Once you've served as vice chair-elect, you'll move up to vice chair the
following year and then ascend to the throne of Publishing SIG chair the third
year.
The three officers enjoy a collegial phone conference every month or so, help
plan the publishing offerings at the ACE conference, attend to changes in the
Critique & Awards program, handle the Publishing Award of Excellence, and keep
the Web page updated. We divvy up these chores so that no one has an onerous
burden.
Won't you join our happy band? The duties are relatively few and the rewards are
plenty, in camaraderie with folks across the country and in making the SIG
useful to all members.
If you have any questions, contact Meg Ashman, current chair, at
meg.ashman@uvm.edu
or 802-656-0300; Glenda Freeman, current vice chair, at
freemgr@auburn.edu or 334-844-5694; or Helen White, current vice-chair
elect, at
h-white@tamu.edu or 979-862-3309.

Indepth PubSIG programming for 2005 ACE/NETC conference to feature copyright
issues and the future of publishing
In addition to a number of breakout sessions (including some fairly technical
ones) with publishing as the major or secondary focus that were proposed by
individual ACE members, the 2005 ACE/NETC conference will feature several
indepth PubSIG-planned sessions. These evolved from the PubSIGs November
conversation call. Two back-to-back 50-minute sessions, coordinated by Gloria
Holcombe with help from other PubSIG members, will focus on copyright issues.
And one 110-minute session, coordinated by Evie Engel and including Tom Knecht
and Lisa Jasa, will focus on the future of publishing. Descriptions of these
sessions follow.
"Copyright 101":
The Internet, photo editing software, and distance education have muddied the
waters on copyright issues. Students, professors, and county agents seem to
think that anything on the Web is theirs to use with no need to credit sources.
Listen to some experts explain fair use, copyright infringement, and plagiarism.
"Copyright from the print and web publishers point of view":
This follow-up session will continue the discussion on copyright related to
web and print publishing. Our presenters from the first session will interact
with ACE members on specific copyright problems and how they have dealt with
them.
"The Future of Publishing: Convergence of Media":
The practice and meaning of publishing continues to change from preparing
text and illustrations for paper distribution. Contemporary publishing includes
the written word, still images, audio, and video distributed on CD, DVD, and the
Internet. As the media converge, publishing becomes intertwined with
broadcasting, website development, and content development for handheld
computers and cell phones. Participants can expect discussions on how to retool
themselves to broaden capability of media, how editors/writers/designers might
interact more effectively with software developers and video producers, and how
communication professionals can capitalize on the convergence of media to
deliver messages effectively.
Thanks to all of you who are helping to make programming at the ACE/NETC
Conference valuable to PubSIG members! And for those PubSIG members who won't be
attending the conference, we intend to make information from the sessions
available to you.
