January 2003 ACE Pub SIG Newsletter

Hi, Publishing SIG members.

Happy new year, and welcome to the first ACE Publishing SIG e-newsletter of 2003! ACE Coordinator Amanda Chambliss informs me that Helen White (Texas A&M), Lisa Caines (U of Guelph), and Jennifer Sconyers (Oklahoma State U), and Karen Cannon (National Agricultural Statistical Service) have joined our august group. A hearty Publishing SIG welcome to you all!

This morning I joined a conference call with ACE VP Judy Winn and representatives from all of the ACE SIGs, and as a result I can share the following remarks, requests, and reminders.

PROGRAM PLANNING FOR ACE/NETC 2003 IN KANSAS CITY
The Program Planning Committee reports that they've got a full schedule (and then some!) of breakout sessions and workshops for this June's meeting in Kansas City. Thanks again to all Publishing SIG members who submitted proposals. You can see the proposals at the official Cool Bytes/Jazz Nights KC web site.

CRITIQUE AND AWARDS NEWS
If you are participating in this year's C&A program, I'm sure you already know that the submission deadline is tomorrow, January 31. You may also be aware that the submission form that was first posted to the ACE web site was last year's form, and was missing a request for information on the "Extent to which project met goals or objectives." If you sent in an entry using the old form, you may want to contact ACE Headquarters (or they'll contact you) to give them that additional information. Good luck with your C&A entries!

UNCLE SIG WANTS YOU!
We'll be electing a new Vice-Chair-Elect for our SIG this spring. In effect, it's a three-year term, transitioning to Vice-Chair at the end of year one and to Chair at the end of year two. Leadership responsibilities are shared among the three SIG leaders, with guidance from the ACE VP and other helpful individuals. I've enjoyed it; I've learned some good lessons in leadership and have had the opportunity to work with some great people. Maybe you will, too! Send me an e-mail if you'd like to toss your hat (or a colleague's) into the ring. The election will be held via e-mail.

SPECIAL AWARDS
ACE is seeking nominees for several awards outside of the C&A process. You can learn about the PIONEER, PROFESSIONAL, REUBEN BRIGHAM, and BEACON awards and how to submit nominations at the ACE Awards web page. Those nominations are due by the end of February. You'll also be hearing about our SIG's AWARD OF EXCELLENCE soon from our Vice-Chair-Elect, Natalie Johnson.

STRATEGIC PLANNING
ACE is a professional development association, and it follows that the Publishing SIG is a professional development SIG. Over the next few months we'll be assembling ideas on how best to be just that, as part of a strategic planning process for the SIG. We had a number of good suggestions at last summer's SIG meeting, and we'd like to hear from you if you have any other suggestions or requests. Some suggestions from last summer are --encourage members to be more active in sharing their experiences --encourage them to use the SIG e-mail list to troubleshoot problems --build awareness of NRMO and other organizations that complement our own work

AND DON'T FORGET:

  1. The news deadline for the next SIGnals is February 28! Send all items, short or long, to Chris Penko (CLPenko@mail.ifas.ufl.edu).
  1. The Journal of Applied Communications is a great place to publish a book review. If you've just found a great new reference work, share the wealth! Write it up and let your fellow ACE members know.
Have a great weekend.
