Marketing SIG Newsletter
Howdy! Here is the Marketing SIG's newsletter, complete with SIG business
stuff, marketing/PR book reviews, article summaries, and upcoming conferences
and seminars to help you keep up with the latest trends and happenings
without tons of reading. Since everyone belongs to different organizations
and reads and subscribes to different books and journals, please submit
your own reviews and briefs so we have a wider diversity than just the
books and magazines I read. Also, don't forget you can find this newsletter,
along with other marketing resources, on our SIG's Web site at http://agprogram.tamu.edu/ace/marketing.

Officers Wanted
We have two officer positions open for 2001-02: vice chair and vice
chair-elect. This is a great opportunity for those of you who need national
activities to put on your resume/vita, helping you get promoted in your
organizations (along with a pay raise, we hope!). SIG duties will be
split up among all three officers, including Ami Neiberger who will
be chair. These duties include maintaining the Web site, writing periodic
newsletters such as this one, completing reports, and helping to plan
marketing programs for the ACE international conference and other special
conferences. If you are interested, please e-mail me your name and the
position you'd like to have by March 30. ________________________________________________________________
Welcome, Dennis!
Please welcome our newest SIG member, Dennis Murphy, murphydj@missouri.edu,
from the University of Missouri. Here's his bio: "I've come to extension
following 15 years of freelancing illustration and design. My background
is from art rather than journalism (BFA, 1985 from the University of
Missouri/Columbia) and I am very interested in images and how they impact
the viewer. I specialize in creating visual analogies that invite, explain,
and inspire. After working alone for many years, it is a joy to experience
the comradery and stimulation that a publications group provides. Current
projects include Web site construction for environmental quality, IPM
(Integrated Pest Management) campaign design, and classroom curricula."

Marketing Conference
OK, here's another plea for people to serve on a committee to plan an
ACE-sponsored conference on marketing. I was thinking if we start planning
now, we could probably have the conference in October or November 2001.
The location could be in a major, central city like Kansas City, St.
Louis, Chicago, New Orleans or Dallas that has inexpensive airfare and
has plenty of PR/marketing professionals to use as presenters. If you're
interested on serving on this committee, please e-mail me now. We've
been talking about this conference for a very long time so let's show
what our SIG is made of and let's walk the walk! ________________________________________________________________
Resources for Your Environmental Stories
The March 5, 2001 issue of PR Week contains a good article that lists
sources and reporters to place your environmental stories: Marla Cohen,
Los Angeles Times; Richard Harris, National Public Radio; Natalie Pawelski,
CNN; and Eric Pianin, The Washington Post. Some Internet news sites
that have environmental sections include the Environmental News Network
(http://www.enn.com/); High Country News (http://www.hcn.org/); Lycos
Environment News Service (http://www.ens.lycos.com/); and MSNBC Environment
News (http://www.msnbc.com/news/environment_front.asp) ________________________________________________________________
Tips for Getting Your PSAs Broadcast
An article in the March 5 issue of PR Week says that to succeed in the
world of cause-related marketing, your public service announcements
must be provocative, well-produced, and comprehensively pitched. Some
specific tips: Conduct market research and hold focus groups to gauge
how your audience reacts. Make sure you create multiple spots of varying
length – 10, 30, and 60 seconds to meet slot requirements. Your PSA
better look great because it most likely will be flanked by professionally
made commercials. Make all your PSAs and related information available
on the Internet (see the Ad Council's Web site at http://www.adcouncil.org/).
Compile an extensive list of all appropriate outlets, including the
contact person. Develop relationships with public service directors
by keeping tabs on their professional organizations, such as the National
Broadcast Association for Community Affairs, as a way to develop contacts.
Every PSA delivered needs to be accompanied by detailed contact and
support information. ________________________________________________________________
Basics of Integrated Marketing Communications
For those of you new to marketing communications, you may want to buy
CASE's Integrated Marketing Communication: A Practical Guide to Developing
Comprehensive Communication Strategies. This is one of the few books
that focuses on marketing in a higher education setting. The book focuses
on integrating university communications but you can adapt the ideas
presented to your college or agency. You'll learn the basics of an integrated
marketing communications plan, a visual identity system, an effective
internal communications program, a crisis communications plan, a strategic
message-driven media relations plan, special events coordination, integrated
publication strategies, integrated advertising campaigns, and effective
Web sites. This is a good reference to have on your book shelf. You
can purchase the book at http://www.case.org/books. ________________________________________________________________
