ACE President 1935-36 University of Maine Orono, ME United States Department of Agriculture Washington, D.C. Glenn Rule was born January 20, 1893, in Mt. Gilead, Ohio. When he was two years old, the family moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado, because of the poor health of his mother. His mother died in 1899, and the family returned to the family farm in Mt. Gilead. He graduated from Ohio State University in 1917 with a degree in agriculture and worked as a county agent in Van Wert County, Ohio, until 1928, when he went to Cornell University to study journalism. In 1929, he became extension editor at the University of Maine and served there until December 1935, when he transferred to Washington, D.C., to work for the U. S. Department of Agriculture's newly formed Soil Conservation Service (SCS). By the time he retired from the SCS in 1960, he was executive officer to the administrator. Following his retirement, he conducted domestic tours throughout the U. S. for foreign groups interested in American agriculture. He died February 11, 1984, in Alexandria, Virginia, at the age of 91.
